Easy Acoustic Guitar Songs For Beginners – 10 More Artists

In September 2008 I wrote an article for a website about how to choose easy acoustic guitar songs for beginners. Now this article has caused quite a stir and has been read by over 20,000 people online. I was both delighted and amazed at the interest and response to this article. I have also been asked to clarify how I find easy music for guitar to play and recommend to my students. The original list of artists was as follows.

All of these musicians have their music published in easy to play format. This means that the number of chords and changes are reduced to help the beginner guitarist. Sometimes the key signature is changed to make it easier to play with simple chords. What is most important is to stay away from artists that write their music with complex musical structures that you cannot follow as a guitar learner.

The group Chicago from the 70's and 80's were notorious for making their songs almost unplayable because they had so many chords and strange arrangements. Even an accomplished guitar player has trouble playing “If you leave me now” even though the melody line is so simple. Stevie Wonder also writes deceptively difficult songs that sound simple when in fact there are not. This is a great skill for experienced guitar players but no use to a beginner guitarist.

What to look for to find simple guitar songs to play. Listen to songs in the light of your guitar playing. Do they seem to be changing mood and chords all the time or do they have a simple arrangement that you can follow in your head quite easily. The recent single from The Killers called “Human” is a great example of a simple and clever arrangement that has been expertly arranged to sound more complicated than it really is. Most beginner guitar players would be able to play through the chords to this song quite easily.
